British Karate Championship

As most of you will know, the Karate Kai Scotland entered a small squad into this year’s British Karate Championship; the squad comprised of
Katrina Kinney (Kugatsu)
Laura Slevin (Kokusai)
Heather McLaren (Kokusai)
Kirsty McLeod (Kokusai)
Sharon McCann (Kugatsu)
Laura Williams (Kugatsu)
Bryan McCann (Kugatsu)
Squad Coach - Bobby Morton
Referees - Billy Haggarty
Graham McCann
There was a huge entry for this year’s championship (Saturday’s events started at 9.00 a.m. and finished at 10.30 p.m.!!) and the squad were a credit to themselves and the association with all performing well despite a lot of sitting around waiting for events to start.
The weekend was a great success.
Katrina British Champion 2009 (Female veterans kumite) & 5th Place (Senior female kumite <68kg)
Laura S Bronze Medal (Female 16 – 17 years kumite <48kg)
Kirsty Bronze Medal (Senior female kumite 68kg +)
Female Kumite Team Bronze Medal (Senior Female team kumite) (Katrina, Heather and Kirsty)
Billy Promoted to British Kumite referee and British Kata judge
Graham Promoted to British Kumite referee and British Kata judge
Unfortunately Sharon was unable to compete on the day due to injury. Laura W and Bryan both performed well in their respective kata events with Laura getting through to the repocharge and Bryan being knocked out in the second round. Heather also fought in the senior female kumite event; despite fighting well she was narrowly beaten by a strong competitor from England.
Well done to the squad.
